The Gumball 3000 Rally: The Greatest Spectacle in Car-dom!
It’s that time again. Time for the Gumball 3000 Rally. As a resident of the New York Metropolitan Area and a certified / certifiable lover of all things automotive, I have never been so excited and honored for an event to come to this fair city. At Noon on May 25, 2012, Time Square has the honor of being the location of the starting grid for this years Gumball. Gumball3000.com says it best:
“100 of the world’s most beautiful, expensive, desirable, classic, eco and extravagant automobiles converge on the Big Apple, with 200 participants taking part, flying in from over 40 countries to take their place on this exclusive grid!”
Perhaps I should start at the beginning. The Gumball 3000 is a yearly 3,000 mile international rally on public highways and byways, with a different route around the world annually. Founded in 1999 by Maximillion Cooper, it enters 120 kick-ass cars annually. No Dodge Caravans or Huyundai Elantras here. However, it’s not always Bugattis and one-of-a-kind Ferraris. Past years have seen camper vans and police cars entered.
Remember, the Gumball Rally is not a race. (HAHA…Suuuure!) There are no prizes for speed and no official timing, but that doens’t mean the drivers don’t rack up a few points on their drivers’ licenses.
The Gumball 3000 Rally is open to anyone who can afford the £25,000 fee. Ok, that may not be every body, but I don’t really care if my brother’s VW Jetta in driving the rally. I want to see things like an Aston Martin One-77 or Morgan Aero Supersports.

Again, to quote Gumball3000.com:
Since 1999 Gumball 3000 has successfully combined art, automobiles, music and film to create a unique aspirational lifestyle brand…With a pioneering spirit and an attraction that transcends social barriers our mission is to build a global lifestyle brand of the future.
“Gumball is about challenging tradition and taking a non conventional approach to exploring and developing cultural and creative boundaries” Maximillion Cooper, Founder & CEO, Gumball 3000 Group.
This year’s route is from New York to Hollywood. At each stop, part of the city is shut down and an all-out Gumball Festival is held featuring music, art, entertainment and, of course, cars.
