Lamborghini Announces 50th Anniversary Plans in Monterey

Forty-nine years ago, Ferruccio Lamborghini was a tractor builder, car collector and driving enthusiast. He was particularly fond of Ferraris, but thought them a bit too rough, loud and unrefined for daily driving. One day, the clutch on his Ferrari decided to break, again. As was the necessity, it was brought to Modena to be repaired. While there, he had a chat with Enzo Ferrari, suggesting he use higher quality and more durable parts in the cars. Enzo, not being one to take suggestions from a maker of farm equipment, told Segniore Lamborghini as much, saying Lamborghini was just a tractor maker and couldn’t possibly know about high performance road cars. Well, that was the straw that broke the tractor’s back. Ferruccio Lamborghini decided, then and there, that he would make it his life’s goal to create the perfect grand touring car. With that, in 1963, Automobili Lamborghini was born.
Since then, we have seen, among others, the 350 GT, the first Lamborghini; the Miura, the world’s first supercar; the Countach, the greatest “pin-up car” in history (ironically named after the Piedmontese expression made when admiring a beautiful woman); the Gallardo, the first true combination of Italian driving passion and German reliability; and the Aventador, the one of the greatest supercars on Earth. And, next year, Lamborghini turns fifty. Lambo has come a long way, and, as they say, “100 years of innovation in half the time.”

Yesterday, at the Quail, A Motorports Gathering in Monterey, California, Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann announced Lamborghini’s plans for turning the big five-oh. To celebrate their fiftieth anniversary, Lamborghini is holding celebrations throughout 2013 with events around the world. The celebrations culminate in May 2013, fifty years from the laying of the cornerstone of the Lamborghini factory in Sant’Agata Bolognese, with the Grande Giro Lamborghini 50º Anniversario (The Lamborghini 50th Anniversary Grand Tour).
From May 7 to May 11, The Lamborghini 50th Anniversary Grand Tour, the largest rally in Lambo history, will run a 1,200 km course through Italy. May 7, 2013, the Grand Tour begins in Milan, runs to Forte dei Marmi, Rome and Bologna, finishing at Lamborghini’s factory in Sant’Agata Bolognese on May 11th for a day of events, entertainment and food. You know, exactly a way an Italian supercar company should celebrate their birthday.

No word yet on any of the other anniversary events to take place throughout the world. Lamborghini will be posting updates and event info on their fiftieth anniversary site, Lamborghini50.com. But, we do know that Lamborghini will donate 10 percent of the proceeds of sponsorship revenue to a charity fund helping those affected by the earthquakes that his the Emilia-Romagna region earlier this year. Definitely an excellent cause.
So, there’s not new crazy fiftieth anniversary car…yet. The limited to 20 edition $2.2 million non-street-legal track car, the Sesto Elemento, is set to drop in 2013. Fingers crossed for some other crazy limited anniversary edition (production Aventador J???). We’ll have to just wait and see.
