Jaguar F-Type: Jaguar’s Latest True Sportscar

Like most auto brands, Jaguar is terrible at keeping secrets, especially on cars as anticipated as the F-Type.  So, last week, we took a stab at the specs for the upcoming feline sports car.  Now, Jaguar has officially debuted the F-Type in Paris at the Musée Rodin, and it’s time to explore the F-Type for real.  

As expected, the Jaguar F-Type, which starts at about $69,000, is going to be a true two-seater (Jaguar calls is a 1+1).  This makes it the only two-seat Jaguar on the market, although the argument can be made that the XK is effectively a two-seater.  The formula of two seats plus one ragtop is definitely a good start.

As with other cars in the Jaguar paddock, the F-Type will come in three trim levels, the F-Type, F-Type S and F-Type V8 S.  In addition to varied exterior and interior bits, the levels really indicate the F-Type’s three escalating powerplants.  The F-Type will be powered by Jag’s supercharged 3.0 liter V6, putting out 340 horse and 332 lb-ft of torque, about 5 less than the current Porsche 911.  The F-Type S is a little spunkier with its supercharged 3.0 liter V6 making 380 hp at 339 lb-ft, or 15 hp less than the Porsche Carrera S.  At the top of the power heap, the F-Type V8 S boasts a supercharged 5.0 liter V8 cranking out 495 horse and 460 lb-ft of torque.  That puts it squarely in the Audi R8 V8 territory…65 hp more to be precise.  

Jaguar claims the V8 is good for 4.2 seconds 0-60 and a top of 186 mph.  The F-Type S and F-Type will do 4.8 seconds to 60 with a top speed of 171 and 5.1 seconds 0-60 topping out at 161, respectively.  All three engines and trims come with the same ZF eight-speed flappy-paddle gearbox, though a traditional manual will be offered sometime down the line.

The design of the F-Type does keep some of the feel from the hallowed E-Type, but it is certainly it’s own car.  Drawing heavily from the C-X16 concept, the Jaguar F-Type is almost an inch shorter than the Porsche Carrera but has a longer wheelbase by almost 7 inches.

This should make for some delightful handling characteristics, especially when combined with the relatively low curb weight of 3,520 lbs.  The all new aluminum structure makes the F-Type’s the most rigid of Jaguar chassis.  The active dampers and 14.6:1 hydraulic steering rack should help, too.  As with most cars today, Jaguar has fitted the F-Type with a “dynamic mode” which changes shift points, steering assist, throttle and traction control intervention. 

As for the interior and exterior styling, take a look for yourself.  The Jaguar F-Type was anticipated to be a fitting heir to the E-Type.  And from the looks of it, it is.  Now, we just have to wait and see how it drives.
