IWC’s Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Top Gun Miramar

So, the US Navy Fighter Weapons School and its TOPGUN training program moved from Air Station Miramar to Naval Air Station Fallon in 1996.  Actually Miramar isn’t even a Navy facility anymore.  It belongs to the US Marine Corps.  But, don’t tell IWC.

Former US NAS Miramar       Current US MCAS Miramar

The Pliot’s Watch Chronograph Top Gun Miramar is part of a line of Pilot’s Watch Top Gun editions by IWC.  With an olive green textile strap, ceramic & titanium case and an anthracite dial with beige & red accents, the watch certainly has a clear military feel.  The watch is very well designed.  The muted colors and the heavy-duty feel of the materials make you feel far more bad-ass when you’re wearing it.  Some people may get a sudden urge to drive a Hummer H1.

The case houses IWC’s 89365 calibre movement.  This self-winding movement has a 68-hour power reserve and is housed within a “soft iron” inner case to protect from magnetic fields.  In keeping with the theme of military efficiency, the dial is very cleanly laid out, with the beiger outer minute (chapter) ring, the red inner hour circle, the two-register chronograph, seconds register and date display very easy to read.

This watch is big, about the same size as the Big Pilot.  At a diameter of 46 mm and height of 16.5 mm, it’s not subtle.  However, the proportions and smooth lines of the watch make it appear to be a bit smaller that it actually is.

Rear of the Watch Featuring the TOP GUN Insignia

The back of the watch is actually my favorite part.  In favor of an uncluttered dial, IWC put the insignia of United States Navy Fighter Weapons School – Top Gun on the caseback.  It’s a nice way to finish off a very well designed watch.
