Horsepower to Reindeer Power Conversion for Your Automotive Christmas Perusing

Of all the methods of transport that exist, it must be argued that Santa Claus’s sleigh and eight flying reindeer rank among the coolest and fastest out there (He does make it around the world in one night including several stops, after all).  

 
So, with Christmas and Santa’s annual trek coming up on Monday, it got me thinking…what if the power of the world’s cars was measured in Reindeer Power instead of horsepower?  Keep in mind, since my magical skills are somewhat lacking, and I have yet to see a flying Lamborghini Gallardo, this is regular grounded reindeer power.
 
First step is to determine the “power” of an average horse.  There is a lot of variety in horses.  Thus, after some research on the history of the term “horsepower”, I learned it was invented by James Watt of steam engine fame to compare the power of steam engines relative to that of a draft horse.  Draft horses can pull approximately one ton for an extended period of time.
 
Okay, 2,000 pounds pulled for a horse.  I found that reindeer, after further research, can pull about 300 pounds.  That means reindeer are 15% as powerful as a draft horse or Reindeer Power = Horsepower / 0.15.

    • Keep in mind, Santa’s reindeer are likely more powerful than the average grounded reindeer. Magic is a serious advantage. Also, slave labor is rather a bad idea.

  2. No mention of the real definition of a HP – the ability to lift one pound a distance of 1 ft in 1 second? (I think that’s it) You are using the largest/strongest horse and making some WAG (not even close to a SWAG). Try again.

    • Now that you bring up the definition of horsepower, try agin. It is actually defined the power needed to lift 550 pounds one foot in one second and equal to 745.7 watts. Oddly enough, eighteenth and nineteenth century (James Watt’s time period) work horses actually worked at about 1 HP over sustained periods of time. If you want to actually set off to study the HP of a reindeer, I will be happy to redo any calculations based on your studies, though I think it’s rather cold in their habitat this time of year. Oh, yeah…most importantly, this is not a serious article. I thought using Santa as a point of reference was a strong hint at that.
