AP Puts Forth a Their Best to Honor the Best.
The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept Laptimer Michael Schumacher is the fourth Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept since the original bowed in 2002. AP’s Concepts always demonstrate the manufacture’s best and most innovative materials, techniques and technologies. And, as this watch honors Micheal Schumacher, who is arguably the greatest driver to have ever gripped a steering wheel, the latest Concept needs to be pretty special as well.
In December 2013, retired Formula 1 champ Michael Schumacher suffered a serious head injury while skiing and was in a coma until June 2014. While he is currently recovering at his home near Geneva, Schumacher is wheelchair-bound (for now, at least… I, for one would never count Schume out… of anything).
And, while many of his erstwhile sponsors have since ceased their partnership with Michael Schumacher, Audemars Piguet and CEO Francois Bennahmias continue to represent the great driver and racer in history. The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept Laptimer Michael Schumacher honors Schumacher’s racing achievements.
Seven world titles, 68 pole positions, 91 victories, 221 points-winning races and 5,114 laps-lead… Michael Schumacher’s racing accomplishments are highlighted on the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept Laptimer Michael Schumacher page and are the basis of elements on the watch.
Seven stars (one for each world title) decorate the forged carbon case of the Concept Laptimer Michael Schumacher just above the third chronograph pusher which stops one of the two concurrently running hands while resetting the other, meaning you can you can record one lap time while timing the next. This is a unique function of AP’s caliber 2923. Hence the name Concept Lap Timer. What else could possible grace a Micheal Schumacher watch?
The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept Laptimer Michael Schumacher is also fitted with a traditional flyback chronograph, 30-minute counter and small seconds indicator housed within its 44 mm forged carbon case. To give you an idea of the magnitude of this function, the AP Concept Laptimer Michael Schumacher is the first-ever mechanical chronograph with both a flyback chrono and alternative consecutive laptiming functions thanks to the 2923’s three column wheel design, which itself is the result of five years of research and development.
All of this mechanical glory is visible through an openworked dial and sapphire crystal display back. A titanium bezel, ceramic accents, rose gold pusher and a rose gold crown complete the subdued coloring of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept Laptimer Michael Schumacher.
Audemars Piguet will only product 221 examples, one for each of Schumacher’s points-winning races. And, they are boutique exclusives, costing $229,500.
