Ah, car commercials. They’re the way car makers introduce us to their latest offerings… to the latest and greatest innovations in automotive design, technology and, well, bull-hockey. They’re also how car companies tell us which cars were supposed to covet above all others and why. I mean, how else are we supposed to know that Chevrolet is the Heartbeat of America or that Ford wants us to Drive One to Go Further? If there were no commercials, we wouldn’t understand that if we buy an Audi, we can drive like Jason Statham or get our dream girl at prom.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I like car commercials. CORECTION: some car commercials. Occasionally, ads are engrossing, dramatic and incredibly creative, often times more so than the latest oeuvres from Hollywood. Others are absolutely hilarious… sometimes even on purpose. Some car commercials even educate you about a car. I’m not saying that if you get a Ford Fiesta, you’ll learn to drift around the twisties like Ken Block, but you may be inspired to spice up your weakly run to the grocers.
The thing about car commercials is that they’re strongly influenced by the culture of the time. Car commercials give a glimpse, a tiny thirty-second to a minute window into the past where you know what it was like to want a 1963 AMC Rambler Rogue or a be a hip cat in a modern haircut and snazzy clothes in a 1976 Ford Capri GL. So, I thought I’d take a gander at the car commercials that have swayed us into one car or another since the 1960s and pull out my favorites for each decade, plus a few extras from recent years that I like. Have a luck and let me know what you think.
