2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA250 Long Term Review: 6 Months

The Summary

2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA250 Long-Term Test Car - Northern Lights Violet Metellic Long Term Review Road Test 4043 2

It’s pretty simple.  Apart from a few nuisances, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA250 is a pretty good car.  It’s fun to drive.  It’s absolutely beautiful.  And, it gets obscenely good gas mileage.  The wiring harness issue may crop up on other CLA-Class, but the fix is quick.  The sudden loss of power could be a bit dangerous is the wrong conditions.  Apart from that, would we recommend a 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA250?  Yeah, definitely.  Starting at $29,900 it’s a good alternative to a Volkswagen CC or Audi A3 or even a Toyota Camry.

  1. Do you think the car will last long? Also do you think the engine stop/start will kill the engine? I want to use it but i’m afraid its going to do more harm for just saving some mpgs.

    • Michael, thanks for the question. We haven’t had any issues with our CLA since that little trip to the shop. I don’t think the start/stop will cause any long-term issues. Mercedes engines have always been on the torque-y side, and perhaps the roughness of the start/stop is (at least partially) a byproduct of that. But, like with any new car or new model, the first few off the production line are bound to have a couple hiccups. I still use the Eco mode pretty consistently in favor of those few additional mpgs. But, summer is coming, and since the AC doesn’t work with the car off, I don’t think I’ll be worried about fuel consumption when the temp reaches the high-90s.

  2. Have a 2015 CLA 250C sport. No issues so far except a few paint blemishes. Have a similar impression. A little tight in the back but nice size trunk. Comfortable seats but not overly impressed with ergonomics. Hate the auto stop so keep it turned off. Nav kind of antiquated, phone system sucks and rear visibility marginal. Lights and light packaged phenomenal really sharp on the road. Descent ride except on rough pavement then it feels truck like. Beautiful lines, front and back exceptional . Surprising power coupled to exceptional gas milage.

    • Thanks for the comment! Really interesting to hear your thoughts. Perhaps Mercedes-Benz made a bit of a boo-boo in using the old tech in the CLA when the cool new stuff from the 2015 C-Class hit stores shortly thereafter.

  3. I have a 2014 cla250 and it’s in the shop for the wiring harness. They said that was the issues with the stop and start not working anymore. I noticed it fairly quick so took it in and also had a serp belt also covered under warranties. Hopefully it’s not every cla250.
