By now, everyone is pretty familiar with the current Audi R8 which has been around since 2006. It’s has a gorgeous understated design and performs even better than it looks (which is saying something). But, next year we get a new R8 for 2013 which promises to be better performing and better looking.
So, as an homage to the outgoing R8 model, today, Audi announced the U.S. only R8 Exclusive Selection Editions for the V8 and V10 R8 coupes, arriving later this month. When Audi says “exclusive,” they’re not kidding. Only 20 Exclusive Selection Edition R8 V8s and 30 Exclusive Selection Edition R8 V10s will be produced.

What qualifies as an exclusive selection? Well, on the outside of the R8 V8 you get the new Daytona Gray matte paint, carbon fiber splitter and diffuser, 19 inch titanium five-arm double spoke wheels, black grill surround, black exhaust ends, the taillights off of the R8 GT and red brake calipers. It all makes the car look very mean. On the inside, the red calipers are echoed with Crimson Red interior elements and contrast stitching, a sportier & thicker multifunction steering wheel and exclusive leather interior bits. Oh yeah, don’t forget the carbon fiber trim, Bang & Olufsen audio system and navigation with the Audi Music Interface. Now the important part, under the hood. The 2012 Audi Exclusive Selection Edition R8 V8 is powered by a 4.2 liter FSI V8, good for 430 hp at 7,900 rpm and 316 lb-ft of torque from 4,500 to 6,000 rpm.

While the R8 V8 looks rather angry, the 2012 Exclusive Selection Edition R8 V10 is very black and white, literally. The R8 V10 comes in the very non-matte Ibis White exterior with shiny Brilliant Black features, like the sideblade, mirrors and rear license plate surround. I still don’t know why anyone would get the sideblades in anything but unpainted carbon fiber. To finish off the exterior mods, the R8 V10 gets 19 inch two-tone e-tron wheels and R8 GT taillights. Inside you’ll see Ibis and Alabaster White contrast stitching and a carbon fiber monoposto driver cockpit area. A similar contoured steering wheel and interior leather bits complete the package. A 525 hp 5.2 liter FSI V10 with 391 lb-ft of torque at 6,500 rpm powers the R8.

Both versions can be ordered with a six-speed manual or automatic R tronic transmission. Though I would stick with the stick. MSRP for the 2012 Exclusive Selection Edition R8 V8 is $137,700 for the manual and $146,800 for the R tronic. MSRP on the 2012 Exclusive Selection Edition R8 V10 is $161,500 for the manual and $170,600 for the R tronic. I’ll take a 2012 Exclusive Selection Edition R8 V8 with a V10 put in it, please.
